1.       What is learner-centered instruction (LCI)?

LCI is a learning process in which students develop their understanding by using activities where they can be involved by means of their interests, likes, and cultural backgrounds.

2.       What is the main role of the teacher in LCI?

The teacher must prepare a special environment; he must encourage students; he must design activities according to the different learning styles and he has to help student involve in the process.

3.     Explain the 4 key principles of student centered learning.

·      Learning is personalized: Teachers know students and have a strong relationship with them so the teacher can help students in their development of knowledge.   

·      Learning is competency-based: Students can perceive the world at their own pace, the learning process is about the skills students can master.

·      Learning happens anytime, anywhere: Students continue learning outside the school and that is because the school is not a traditional one.

·      Students take ownership: Teachers must take decisions about students with them so they can feel involved and the results can be meaningful.

Learner-centered instruction is a teaching style where the student plays the main role in the learning proces. It incorporates skills in the process of learning and is guided to help students be aware of the importante of their active participation.

The main role of the teacher in Learner-centered instruction is to become a facilitator of the learning. He has to incorporate multiple teaching teacniques which address the needs of different learning styles.

The four principles of Learner-centered instruction are:

  1. Learning is personalized as each student has an own learning style identified by the teacher through the close relationship a teacher has with his students.
  2. Learning is competency-based because students aim is to master information and skills rather that completing a curriculum.
  3. Learning happens anywhere and everywhere. Suggests the use of the environment close to the students where learning can take place. Outdoor learning can lead students to important discoveries.
  4. Students take ownership. A teacher who practices learner-centered instruction reaches his goal when the student becomes responsible for his learning. He plays a direct role in the process.
